The CEOs of Microsoft Satya Nadella and Meta Mark Zuckerberg discussed the expanding impact of AI-generated programming code during their meeting. AI has become substantial enough to control a major portion of Microsoft's programming base which demonstrates a fundamental change in the coding industry among technology firms.

During the onstage discussion, Nadella shared insights into Microsoft’s adoption of AI tools. “I’d say maybe 20%, 30% of the code that is inside of our repos today and some of our projects are probably all written by software,” he told Zuckerberg, noting that the use of AI in coding is steadily increasing. This reflects Microsoft’s strategic push to enhance productivity through automation, reshaping traditional software engineering workflows.

Meta is intensely developing its products through AI-driven methods. Universal systems development uses AI to generate code at Meta but Zuckerberg remains positive about its potential although he doesn't know exactly how much AI is involved. “Our bet is sort of that in the next year probably maybe half the development is going to be done by AI, as opposed to people, and then that will just kind of increase from there,” he said, referring to Meta’s plans to create an AI model capable of autonomously upgrading its Llama series of AI models.

The trend extends beyond Microsoft and Meta. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, speaking during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings call, disclosed a similar reliance on AI. “This has been an extraordinary amount of focus and excitement internally, both because I think the early use cases have been transformative in nature, and it still feels like early days and long ways to go,” he reveals that 30% of Google’s new code is now AI-generated

The rise of AI coding tools has sparked debates about the future of software engineering, particularly around “vibe-coding” and the relevance of traditional coding skills. As AI tools become more sophisticated, many wonder whether learning to code or mastering prompt engineering will be more valuable.
